Year 4

Year 4

Welcome to Year 4

In Year 4, we’re looking forward to a challenging and exciting year by immersing the children in a variety of topics and experiences. Engaged and motivated children is our aim!

Mr Phillips, a brand new teacher to our school, has taken charge of a Year 4 class alongside Mrs Bunn, his TA. Next door is Miss Pierro who is accompanied by Mrs Windiate as her TA.

Curriculum

We aim to make the curriculum exciting and engaging for the children. If you look at the individual class blogs you will be able to see all of the brilliant learning that your children have been doing.  Please click to see  Yr 4 Topic Overview highlighting the topics the children will be learning about throughout the year.  If you click here you can  see what the children are learning in Reading, Writing and Maths in Year 4.

For any help with your child’s handwriting please have a look at this website http://teachhandwriting.co.uk

Homework

Homework creates an important opportunity for parents to be involved in their children’s learning, which we know has a direct impact on their progress.

In Year 4, we set three pieces of homework every Friday. This consists of a spelling sheet, times table sheet and a grammar sheet. All three should be completed and handed in by the following Thursday.

Reading is also part of the children’s homework. Children should be encouraged to read for five minutes every day (or at least 3 times a week). This needs to be recorded and commented on by an adult or the child. Every time a book is finished, the children should complete a book activity found in the Home Link books. There is a system in place to reward children who read regularly.

Equipment

P.E.

P.E. is a vital and compulsory part of the National Curriculum and all children will be expected to participate unless there is a medical reason supported with a letter from home.

Swimming takes place every Monday. The children need to pack a towel, swimming costume (not bikini)/swimming trunks (not baggy shorts). Hair should be tight up and earrings should be removed.

Outdoor P.E. takes place every Wednesday. A plain white shirt, black or green shorts and trainers are required. As it gets colder your child will need black or grey jogging bottoms and plain sweat top.

Pencil Cases

We provide all the equipment children need in class. However, if your child would like to bring a pencil case to school, it must be small/thin enough to fit into their tray.

Water Bottles

We encourage children to bring a named water bottle to school, as we know hydration aids concentration and learning.

Electronics and Toys

To ensure the safety of the children’s belongings it is not permissible for them to bring toys or electronic devises from home into school. Any mobile phones must be handed to their class teacher at the start of the day.  To keep these safe, they will be locked away for the duration of the day, and returned at home time.

Communication

We understand that good communication between school and parents is vital. The quickest way to contact us is to email the office or the teacher.  However, if there is a problem or this is not possible, please do not hesitate to speak to your class teacher at the start or end of the day.
