Year 5

Year 5

Welcome to Year 5

We recognise that this is another exciting and key year for our children. Although there will be many challenges and changes, there will also be a lot of fun. As always, the school aims to prepare, support and nurture our children throughout their educational journey.

The class teachers are Miss Charlesworth who is supported by Ms Salter, and Miss Houlihan who is supported by Mrs Day.

Curriculum

We aim to make the curriculum exciting and engaging for the children. If you look at the individual class blogs you will be able to see all of the brilliant learning that your children have been doing.  Please click to see the Year 5 Subject Overview which will show what topics children will be learning about each year.  You can click to see what the children will need to learn in Reading, Writing and Maths.

If you would like to help your child with their handwriting please have a look at this website, http://teachhandwriting.co.uk

Homework

Homework creates an important opportunity for parents to be involved in their children’s learning, which we know has a direct impact on their progress. In Year 5 homework is set on Friday. Maths, English, Spelling and Book Talk Tasks are to be handed in on Wednesday. If homework is not completed on time, children will lose their break time to complete it.

Equipment

P.E.

P.E. is a vital and compulsory part of the National Curriculum and all children will be expected to participate unless there is a medical reason supported with a letter from home. Lessons take place on Monday and Tuesday.   We aim for all lessons to take place outside (where appropriate), therefore, the correct clothing is vital.  For health and hygiene reasons it is very important that the children have a compete change of clothes.  A plain white shirt, black or green shorts and trainers are required.  As it gets colder your child will need black or grey jogging bottoms and plain sweat top.

Pencil Cases

As the school provides all stationery equipment needed by the children there is no need for them to bring their own equipment. Handwriting pens, which cost 40p, are available from the school office. If your child wishes to bring stationery equipment to school they can, but it is to remain in their school bag until otherwise directed.

Art and DT

Children will get messy, and to prevent damage to their school uniform please could you supply an old shirt which is named.

Water Bottles

We encourage children to bring a named water bottle to school, as we know hydration aids concentration and learning.

Electronics and Toys

To ensure the safety of the children’s belongings it is not permissible for them to bring toys or electronic devises from home into school. Any mobile phones must be handed to their class teacher at the start of the day.  To keep these safe, they will be locked away for the duration of the day, and returned at home time.

Communication

We understand that good communication between school and parents is vital. The quickest way to contact us is to email the office or the teacher.  However, if there is a problem or this is not possible, please do not hesitate to speak to your class teacher at the start or end of the day.
